Bioactive folate Quatrefolic®

Why is folate important?

Folate, or vitamin B9, is a water-soluble vitamin; dietary sources include liver, various beans and other legumes, green vegetables, certain berries, and green herbs. Western diets tend to be low in folate because people consume too few legumes and green vegetables. We need folate for amino acid synthesis (amino acids are the building blocks of proteins), for normal blood cell formation, and for normal homocysteine

metabolism (if there is insufficient folate, homocysteine levels in the bloodstream rise; homocysteine is an amino acid that serves no physiological function in the body, and elevated levels can increase the risk of cardiovascular and certain other diseases); to ensure normal psychological function; and folate also plays an important role in the process of cell division.

Quatrefolic® folate

We use the patented bioactive folate Quatrefolic®—a fourth-generation folate that ensures optimal absorption (Quatrefolic®, 2024). Bioactive folate is already in a form that the body can readily assimilate.

Folate and pregnancy

Folate, or vitamin B9, is a crucial vitamin for women who are planning a pregnancy or are already pregnant. Supplemental folate intake increases the mother's folate levels. Low maternal folate levels are a risk factor for the development of neural tube defects in the growing fetus. The beneficial effect is achieved with a daily supplemental intake of 400 μg of folate, starting at least one month before conception and continuing for up to three months afterwards.

Only natural additives

The folate tablets contain just four ingredients: acerola and chlorella powder, carnauba wax, and, of course, Quatrefolic folate. The tablets are small and easy to swallow, and they also feature a score line.

Charity

Charity is one of our core values. For every product purchased, we make a donation to the Children's Foundation of the Tartu University Hospital.

For the whole family

Our folate is suitable for the whole family, including children. The tablet is easy to split using the score line. If necessary, the tablet can also be crushed into a powder. You can find dosage information on the product packaging.

Suitable also for vegans

Our folate is also suitable for vegans.

Folate vs folic acid

The absorption of dietary folate, bioactive folate, and synthetic folic acid differs. Bioactive folate is already in a form that the body can readily utilize. The utilization of dietary folate and synthetic folic acid varies depending on the activity of the enzyme MTHFR (methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase). Research suggests that the liver plays a key role in converting synthetic folic acid into bioactive folate. However, the liver's capacity to convert folic acid into 5-MTHF is limited due to low and highly variable levels of the enzyme dihydrofolate reductase. This results in the accumulation of unmetabolized folic acid in the body. The conversion of folate and synthetic folic acid into the active form (5-methyltetrahydrofolate) depends on the activity of the MTHFR enzyme, which is genetically determined. Bioactive folate, however, is already in the final 5-MTHF form that the body can utilize.
